Mary Lewis

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Austin Lewis was born August 21, 1937 to the late John Austin Jr. and Mary Bell Nicholson Austin in Maxton, NC.  She attended the Robeson County Public Schools.

She departed this life June 14, 2018 at Shannon Gray Rehabilitation in Jamestown, NC.

She was married to the late Wheller Lewis.  She moved to Mt. Vernon, NY and lived there for more than 25 years.  While there, Mary was a member of Little Friendship V.F.W. Baptist Church.   After relocating back to North Carolina, she made High Point her home.  Mary became a member of Hallejah Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board and sang on the choir.  Mary was also a member of the Eastern Star.  Her favorite hobby was bowling, where she competed and won many championship titles.  Mary was an outgoing person.  She would meet different people from all around and would gain friendships with them.

In addition to Mary’s parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by one great granddaughter, Shyuna McQueen.

She leaves to cherish her memories to: her son, William (Roshelle) McQueen of Thomasville, NC; three sisters, Mrs. Jessie (Roger) Steele of Trinity, NC, Mrs. Rosa Evans of Temple Hills, MD, and Mrs. Mary Ann (Charlie) Shipmon of Maxton, NC; four brothers, John (Mable) Austin, (and friend, Mable), James (Betty) Austin of Maxton, NC, Willie (Sandra) Austin and Robert Austin of High Point, NC; fourteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; three aunts; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
