On May 9, 2015, Mrs. Johnnie Mae “Granny” Brand transitioned to her heavenly home. Granny was born on March 19, 1929 in Daytona Beach, FL to the late Johnny and Corliss Thomas. She received her education in the Putnam County School System. Granny was formerly married to the late Ross William Miller Sr. and from this union seven children were born.
She moved to Philadelphia, PA where she worked in Human Services. After several years in Philadelphia, she relocated to High Point and united in holy matrimony to Willie J. Brand.
Granny was a member of The Greater Power and Praise Tabernacle. She was later ordained by Bishop Kenneth Moales Sr. of The Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ in Bridgeport, CT as a National Mother and now under the leadership of Bishop Hezekiah Walker. She also fellowshipped with her son-in-law, Elder James E. Lindsay of Mt. Nebo Holiness Church, S.A.N.D. District. Her greatest love was traveling with the High Point Community Fellowship Gospel Choir. She became nationally known as “Granny” for her fried chicken, pound cake and her famous quote, “don’t sugar-cote nothing!”
She was preceded in death by three sons, one brother and one sister.
She leaves cherished memories to her husband, Willie Brand; daughters, Johnnie Mae (Jesse) McAllister, Versie Freeman, Pastor Barbara (Otis Sr.) Battles, Shirley (Pastor James) Lindsay all of High Point; one brother, Patrick (Shawna) Flo of Jacksonville, FL; a very loving and devoted daughter in law, Myra Ross of California; grandchildren, great grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
