John Griffin Sr.

May 29, 1948 — February 5, 2018

John Lee Griffin, Sr., 69, parted from this earthly life on Monday, February 5, 2018. He was born May 29, 1948 in High Point, NC to Johnnie Mae Womble-Griffin and the late Lester Griffin. “Griff Baby,” as he was affectionately called, was charismatic, intelligent, charming, creative, and loving.

John Lee graduated from William Penn in 1966. Later that year, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War and later became a Sergeant. In 1967, he married Shirley Ann Cook and became a father later that same year. In addition to serving as a police officer, John Lee wore several other occupational hats. He was also very active in the community and in Baldwin’s Chapel SDA church. Some of his favorite pastimes were drawing, painting, cooking, fishing, singing, listening to music, fixing cars, fixing computers, photography, and most importantly spending time with family and friends.

“Griff Baby” will dearly be missed by his family and friends.

John Lee leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Johnnie Mae Peoples and step-father, Walter Foster; his best friend, Shirley Griffin; four children, Deanna (Jimmy) Rorie, John Lee Griffin, Jr., Mohammed Griffin, and Chuncie Griffin; two grandchildren, Ariel Taylor (Adam Taylor) and Bridgette Alston; four great-grandchildren, Kaleb Johnson, Chaydon Taylor, Loryn Taylor, and Jeremiah Blunt; one niece that he considered his daughter, Zandra (Jay) Miller; one aunt, Cecilia Ingram; several cousins, notably Jimmy Ingram and Jackie Ingram; close relatives that he considered to be his sisters, Faye Newby, Shirley McIver, Kay Carrington, and Irene Wilson; and host of other relatives and friends although not named you were very special to him.
