Elco “Pop” Wright, 92, died Wednesday. May 20, 2013. He was the son of John & Rosanna Lindsay Wright, both deceased. Born in Richmond County, North Carolina,
he moved to High Point at an early age.
He retired from WGHP-TV (Channel 8) and while his health permitted, he worked
for many years with his son and grandson, owners of Eastgate Electronics Center
in the city. He was lovingly and respectfully called “POP” by many who came to
know him.
He was committed to his church and was a great community supporter. As a member of the Mayor’s Community Action committee, he was instrumental in the
installation of the sidewalk in the Washington Street/Gordon Street area up to
the Five Points area for pedestrian safety.
He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in High Point for more than 40 years
where he served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, deacon
and Chairman of the deacon board. At the time of his death, he was deacon
emeritus of Christian Fountain Church in Winston-Salem, NC where his son-in-law
is pastor.
Deacon Wright is survived by his wife of 68 years, 11 months and 11 days, Edna
Terry Wright of the home; his children, Frederick (Janice) Wright, Sr., Brenda
(Rev. Ray) Watlington, Larry Wright, Betty Bliss and Terry Wright, all of High
Point; his sister, Alice Winston of High Point; his grandchildren, Ryan Myers,
Frederick (Tonya) Wright, Jr., Jared Wright, Bradley Bliss, Johnathan (Kenlan)
Bliss, Teriyana Wright, Tia Watlington, Emmanuel Watlington and Tamara
(DeAngelo) Avery; great-grandchildren, Jovan Gonzalez, Bailee Wright and
Isabella Bliss; a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 12:30pm, Saturday, June 1, 2013 at New Bethel
Baptist Church, 1116 Montlieu Ave., with Rev. Ray L. Watlington
officiating. He will lay in state from 11:00am to 12:00pm at the church. Family
visitation will begin at 12:00pm. Burial will be held in Carolina Biblical
Gardens, Jamestown, NC.
