Mattie Lee Cooper was called home on October 25, 2024, at the age of 83. A beloved mother, wife, grandmother, and friend, Mattie touched the lives of so many with her boundless kindness, warmth, and unwavering dedication to family and faith. She will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mattie was born on June 25, 1941, in Wadesboro, NC, where she spent her early years and cultivated a deep love for her community and family. After graduating from high school and earning her degree from Guilford Technical Community College, she went on to serve at Target Department Store, where she retired with a remarkable legacy of dedication and service. Known for her compassionate spirit and a genuine desire to help others, Mattie brought light and kindness to every role she embraced.
As a devoted member of First Emmanuel Baptist Church, Mattie took joy in her role as an usher, serving with humility and a servant’s heart. But more than anything, she found her truest calling as a wife, sharing 54 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband Willie.
Their 60-year journey together was a testament to their enduring love and companionship. A loving mother, grandmother, and sister, Mattie was affectionately known as “Nana” to her great-grandchildren a name she held close to her heart. Always there with an open heart and a listening ear, Mattie was a steady source of strength, guidance, and encouragement to her family and friends, no matter life’s challenges.
She was preceded in death by her father, Sinclair Jones; her mother, Jennie McBride; one son, Jimmy Lee Lindsey; two brothers, Willie and Mark McBride.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Willie; three sisters, Louise Gant, Anne McBride, and Geneva McBride; one brother, Alex McBride (Kathy); her grandchildren, LaSaundra Belcher (Dwight) and Tamara Anderson (Marvin), and her cherished great-grandchildren, Lydia, Tabitha, Hannah, Don, and Hayven.
Mattie’s legacy of love, service, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
Her memory will forever be cherished and held close by all who were blessed to know her.
