Alfred Taylor

June 24, 1942 — March 20, 2018

On March 20, 2018, Alfred Taylor 75 of High Point, NC departed his earthly life.  He was born June 24, 1942 in Durham, NC to the late Mabel Bethea.

At a young age Al moved to Nyack, NY to be raised by his aunts Celestine Barney and Eva Bond.  He attended Nyack High School where he played football, basketball and ran track.

After high school, Taylor attended North Carolina Central in Durham, NC.  While a student there. He met his wife Loretta, who attended NC A & T State University who was a roommate of his first cousin.  In 1972, Al and his family moved to High Point, NC.  He joined the High Point Police Department in 1972, where he received the Rookie of the Year award in 1973.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 1978.  He was promoted as the first African-American Officer to attain the rank of Captain in 1984.  From 1956 – 1960 at Nyack High School, Al was a man that played every sports season.  He was unanimous first team All-County selection in both basketball and football and four-time county champion- twice as an individual in the shot put, and twice as a member of Nyack track relays.  He even earned an award as a member of the JV baseball team.  Along the way he set several county records in scoring, time and distances.  In April 2017, Al was inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 53 years, Lauretta Sexton Taylor of the home; one son Stephen(Angela) Taylor of Greensboro, NC; two daughters, Jennifer Taylor of Concord, NC and Lenora Taylor of High Point, NC; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
